Business Credit Card Offers: The Protections You Give Up, and the Score You Protect

Business cards are exempt from the consumer rules that stop an issuer raising your rate on money you already owe. In exchange, $40,000 of spending stays off your personal credit report entirely.

The consumer protections most people assume apply to credit cards. No rate increases on existing balances, forty-five days' notice before terms change, payments above the minimum applied to your highest-rate balance. Come from the Credit CARD Act of 2009. That Act covers consumer credit cards. Business credit cards are outside it. An issuer can generally raise the rate on a business card balance you already carry, change your terms with far less notice, and allocate your payments as it prefers.

That is the cost side, and it is rarely mentioned in offer copy. The benefit side is substantial and equally under-explained: a business card usually keeps your business spending off your personal credit report, which means $40,000 flowing through a card each year does nothing to your personal utilisation ratio. For anyone who will apply for a mortgage or a business loan in the next couple of years, that single mechanic can be worth more than any welcome offer on the market.

What you gain, quantified

Take a business spending $60,000 a year on cards, with five employees who need their own card, and an owner planning a mortgage application in eighteen months.

Rewards are identical, so the decision is not about earning. It turns on three things: keeping utilisation off your personal file, free employee cards, and a larger welcome offer. Set against giving up the statutory rate protections. For anyone borrowing in the next two years, the utilisation row alone usually settles it.

Which issuers report business cards to your personal file

Reporting practice by issuer
IssuerReports normal activity to personal bureaus?Reports serious delinquency?
Capital OneYes. Treat it as a personal card for utilisationYes
DiscoverYesYes
ChaseNoYes
American ExpressNoYes
CitiNoYes
Bank of AmericaNoYes
U.S. BankNoYes
Wells FargoNoYes

Reporting practice is a business decision, not a legal requirement, and it changes. Verify with the issuer before relying on it, particularly if the utilisation benefit is your reason for applying. Two things hold generally: normal activity reporting varies by issuer, while serious delinquency is reported to personal bureaus by essentially everyone, because you signed a personal guarantee. The upside is optional; the downside is not.

Qualifying, when you barely feel like a business

  • A sole proprietorship counts. Freelance work, consulting, an online shop, rental property, driving, tutoring, reselling. All of it. You do not need an LLC, an EIN or a registered name.
  • Applying as a sole proprietor: business name is your legal name, business type is sole proprietorship, tax ID is your SSN, and years in business runs from when you started earning, not from any filing date.
  • Revenue can be modest and can be an honest estimate. Applications ask for annual business revenue; a realistic figure of a few thousand dollars is a normal answer. Do not inflate it, the application is a signed representation.
  • Approval is underwritten on your personal credit. Expect the same score expectations as a comparable personal card, generally around 690 and up for the better products.
  • A personal guarantee is standard on essentially every small business card. The corporate structure does not shield you; if the business cannot pay, you owe it personally.
  • Corporate cards without a personal guarantee exist but underwrite on business financials, cash balances or revenue. Typically for established companies rather than sole proprietors.

Welcome offers on business cards are genuinely larger than on personal cards, 100,000 points or more is common, but the spending requirement is proportionally larger too, often $8,000 to $15,000 in three months. That is easy for a business with real expenses and an invitation to pull spending forward for a business without them. Meeting a threshold by buying things you did not need converts a bonus into a loss.

Where it works
  • Most issuers keep business card balances off your personal credit report, protecting utilisation and therefore your score before a mortgage or loan application.
  • Employee cards are usually free, against $75 to $175 each for authorised users on personal premium cards.
  • Welcome offers are materially larger, 100,000 points and up is common.
  • Expense separation is clean by construction, which saves real bookkeeping and accountant time.
  • Sole proprietors qualify with an SSN and no EIN, so the barrier to entry is far lower than people assume.
  • Annual fees are generally deductible as a business expense, reducing their effective cost.
Where it costs you
  • Business cards are exempt from CARD Act protections, so the rate on an existing balance can be raised and notice periods are shorter.
  • A personal guarantee is standard, so the business structure gives you no protection from the debt.
  • The hard inquiry and the approval decision both rest on your personal credit.
  • Capital One and Discover report normal business card activity to personal bureaus, which removes the main benefit.
  • Serious delinquency is reported to personal bureaus by essentially every issuer, so the downside reaches your personal file regardless.
  • Welcome offer thresholds of $8,000 to $15,000 in three months encourage pulling spending forward, which turns a bonus into a loss.

VerdictIf you have any self-employment income at all, a business card is worth holding. Mainly to keep business spending out of your personal utilisation ratio, which is worth far more before a mortgage application than any rewards difference. Verify that your chosen issuer does not report normal activity to personal bureaus, take the free employee cards, and treat the missing CARD Act protections as a firm rule never to revolve a balance on it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an LLC or an EIN to get a business credit card?
No. A sole proprietorship qualifies, and that includes freelancing, consulting, an online shop, rental property, driving, tutoring or reselling. You apply with your legal name as the business name, sole proprietorship as the structure, and your SSN as the tax ID. Years in business runs from when you started earning, not from any registration. Approval is underwritten on your personal credit.
Do business credit cards affect my personal credit score?
Usually only at the application, and then only if things go wrong. The application produces a hard inquiry on your personal file, but most issuers. Chase, American Express, Citi, Bank of America, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo among them, do not report ongoing business card balances to personal bureaus, so utilisation stays off your score. Capital One and Discover do report normal activity. Serious delinquency is reported to personal bureaus by essentially everyone.
Why does keeping business spending off my personal credit report matter?
Because utilisation is measured on statement balances, not on whether you pay in full. Routing $40,000 of annual business spending through a personal card with a $25,000 limit can show utilisation near 80% every month, commonly costing 40 to 80 score points. On a $400,000 mortgage, that score difference has repeatedly been worth 0.375% to 0.50% of rate. Roughly $95 to $125 a month, or tens of thousands over the loan.
Are business credit cards covered by the CARD Act?
No, and this is the most important thing that offer copy leaves out. The Credit CARD Act of 2009 applies to consumer cards. Business cards do not carry its protections, which means an issuer can generally raise the rate on a balance you already owe, is not bound by the 45-day advance notice rule, and is not required to apply above-minimum payments to your highest-rate balance. Some issuers voluntarily extend certain protections, read your agreement.
Am I personally liable for business credit card debt?
Yes, on essentially every small business card. A personal guarantee is standard, and it means the business structure gives you no protection. If the business cannot pay, you owe it personally, and serious delinquency appears on your personal credit report. Corporate cards without a personal guarantee do exist, but they underwrite on business financials, cash balances or revenue and are generally aimed at established companies rather than sole proprietors.
Are business credit card rewards taxable?
Rewards earned by spending are generally treated as a rebate on the purchase price rather than as income, so you usually do not receive a 1099 for them. The practical consequence is on the deduction side: an expense reduced by a rebate is deductible at its net cost, so a $1,000 expense that earned $20 back is a $980 deduction. Rewards received without spending, such as referral payments, are more likely to be taxable. Confirm the specifics with your accountant.
